Jarvis Cocker - Further ComplicationsWhile remaining undeniably Jarvis this album is somewhat of a departure from his last few records.
There is a rougher edge and something of the pub band in amongst the glam stomp, the rock fuzz and the disco beat. So while the approach my be different there is still the typical Jarvis vocal and lyrical content.
There is less of the political commentary, this is more inward looking. It makes no claims to be anything other than the musical feelings of a middle-aged man dealing with non-musical feelings.
The offerings here are not as instantly accessible as other pieces but that is perhaps as much to do with it being slightly unexpected than anything else. Further listening reveals some shining moments in amongst the raw rawk (Angela) and soft-edged-jazz-funk (Homewrecker!). The vitriolic lasciviousness is back on Leftovers and You're In My Eyes (Discosong) glows with the perspiration of just having stepped off the dance floor.
As a closer though it does leave a feeling of the lights being switched on at the end of the night, squinting against the glare as your shoes stick to the nightclub floor and you trail out unlucky, the only reward a limp kebab. It leaves you somewhat...wanting...
