While vocally there is a Motown vibe going on there is enough of an edge from the echoed drums and space fades. It's not a sharp edge but it keeps the feeling firmly with Skins rather than The Supremes. Certainly if they were wearing polka dots they'd be pretty interchangeable with The Pipettes.
While undoubtedly cool and a little bit kooky this album leaves you with a cavernous hunger for even a morsel of the soul of '60s girl bands. It's all a little bit bland and teeters on the edge of being fun, holding back in favour of being cool.
It's a steady effort, a pleasant enough listen, not really that disappointing as long as you arrive with no expectations. This is not an album that pushes the boundaries of a genre or defines a time but it's pretty background music for scenesters.
